Who is most likely to attack your systems or steal data?
The U.S. Secret Service and Cert.org have been jointly gathering data and have continued to research the behavior of insiders that commit crimes since 2003. According to their studies, today’s insider is most likely a former or current technical employee that gains access to systems and data to exploit system vulnerabilities for a variety of reasons.
The reason this is important to explain is because the clearly blurs the line between external attacks and internal attacks. Any existing disgruntled employee or former employee accessing information remotely can be extremely difficult to guard against. They may know current security protocols and how to access systems and data without being detected. They could even be aware of exactly where the most important intellectual property is located.
They may have a colleague’s login and passwords in their possession. They may even know how to clear the audit logs to cover their tracks after they have accomplished what they set out to do. Insiders are a huge threat towards critical systems and intellectual property.
